What are Rutgers?

While the Pizza Parlor Index was away, a few developments have taken place, most notably a shakeup in the Big East. Last week West Virginia's national championship hopes (and that of perhaps the most interesting BCS National Championship possible) went into the Ohio River as Louisville thwarted them at Papa John's Stadium. The next week, yesterday, Louisville's hopes went into the Raritan to Rutgers leaving the Scarlet Knights as the Big East's only unbeaten in probably the most exciting moment of the season to date. A couple thoughts:

1) I fully endorse Rutgers' place in the BCS National Championship Game if they are to go the full season undefeated. They will have beaten two top 10 teams, Louisville and West Virginia (although I expect they will lose in Morgantown simplifying things for their critics). The only argument against Rutgers seems to be "yeah, but they're Rutgers" that does not suffice as that kind of logic would have kept George Mason and the Detroit Tigers out of their postseasons.

2) I can't remember looking forward to a regular season sporting event not involving one of my teams than the Ohio State-Michigan game on November 18. The minutes before kickoff to that game will be like a Tyson fight to me. Pageantry's biggest game ever!

3) Here's what I expect to happen. Boise State could trip up at San Jose State this weekend, breaking my heart but making the arguments simpler for some teams that may be better than them. Likewise I expect Rutgers to be overwhelmed against West Virginia. Furthermore Florida and Auburn should win their remaining games making the Florida-Auburn SEC Championship Game to decide the who plays the Ohio State-Michigan winner in Glendale. I expect Florida to win that game, lose to Ohio State while teams like the USC-Cal winner and Texas are shut out. So the system will still crown the best team in the country its national champion but leaving just enough gray area to make us wonder if the system is really working for any of us.

Here's the Index, Syracuse is like 82nd now.

The State College of New Jersey is named after Colonel Henry Rutgers, a Revolutionay War Hero and Trustee of the school back when it was named Queen's College
